BCA Tracker 3 Avalanche Beacon Transceiver

Boasting the lowest volume and fastest processing speed of any tranceiver on the market, the BCA Tracker 3 is a solid choice

Renowned for their no-bullshit approach to avalanche safety, BCA took the fool-proof function of the Tracker 2 and renewed it with a sophisticated, faster and smaller package – the result is the Tracker 3. 20% smaller than its predecessor, the Tracker 3 is small enough to be carried comfortably in a jacket pocket, whilst boasting the fastest processer of any transceiver - meaning even faster pinpointing.

Simple layout for straight forward use

BCA have made it their Modus Operandi to create the most intuitive faff-free transceivers on the market, it’s a sentiment continued in the T3 – the streamlined display features directional arrows, distance indicator, multiple burial indicator, loudspeaker for audio feedback, option button and a handy transmit light which intermittently flashes to indicate when TRANSMIT is engaged.

Switching into SEARCH mode is a snap too – pull open the sliding lock (which stops SEARCH mode from being unintentionally activated) and rotate the dial switch to the “SE” marking. The auto revert mode ensures the T3 automatically reverts to TRANSMIT mode if the device is stationary for one minute–or if it detects movement but the searcher remains in SEARCH mode for more than five minutes. An alarm will sound 30 seconds before the unit returns to transmit mode. This can be avoided by pressing the Options button or turning the dial switch before the 30-second warning period has elapsed.

When it’s imperative to see the bigger picture

With more and more transceivers moving onto a digital platform, the Tracker 3’s “Big Picture mode” is the fast becoming the closest thing you can get to an analogue transceiver. It displays distances and directions of all the transceivers which are transmitting within range. With Big Picture mode, you can estimate how many transceivers are in the search area, along with their approximate direction. You can also perform a search in BP mode, but always remember to return to normal search mode during the fine search when you’re getting close to the victim. Big Picture mode is activated by holding down the Options button until “BP” flashes in the display. You must continue to hold down the Options button to stay in BP mode. Once the Options button is released, the Tracker3 will automatically return to search mode and isolate the strongest signal.

Three antennas, easy handling, low bulk design, intelligent function and no-nonsense search all add up to make the T3 your most valuable asset when you’re riding in avalanche prone terrain. Just make sure you have a shovel and probe with you too, otherwise you might as well be wearing a sign saying “dumbass” instead.
