BIG MOUNTAIN PERFORMANCE MEETS FREETOUR HANDLING – THE BLACK CROWS CORVUS FREEBIRD BLENDS THE OLD WITH NEW, OPENING UP LIMITLESS BACKCOUNTRY OPTIONS IN DOING SO.

Since day one, the Corvus has been a mainstay in the Black Crow’s line-up. It’s the ski upon which the entire brand is built, so to improve on what was already a winning formula was no mean feat. By switching the core to their lightweight Freebird variant though, Black Crows have managed to take what was already the perfect ski for big mountain riding, and make it the perfect ski for freetouring in the same terrain… in addition to still slaying hard and fast descents.

Big Mountain Freetouring dominance

What do you get when you take a ski renowned for its steep and deep aptitude and fuse it with ultralight materials? Eh, well the sub-heading kind of gives it away, but the Corvus Freebird, of course. If you’re the sort of person who’s always on the prowl for their next powder descent, but getting away from the crowded resort is of equal importance, then the Corvus Freebird was built for you. This is a ski which wants to be up before the sunrise, a few hours of hiking under its belt before 9am, followed by a face-shot heavy descent through completely untouched powder… then back at the summit again before lunchtime.

Skinny matchsticks with no float, or unencumbered powder prowess? It’s an easy choice.

The main point of difference between the Corvus Freebird and other touring-specific skis is its on-snow performance. Now, we’re not knocking tour-specific skis - there’s a definite time and place for them - but when you shave off every single possible gram of weight, there tends to be a noticeable downgrade in the skis handling and descent performance. If, like us, you’re as much about the down as the up, then that’s just not a compromise you’re willing to make - rest assured, the Corvus Freebird delivers on both fronts. The core isn’t just superlight, it’s super-durable and responsive too. Black Crows have achieved this by stripping back the poplar in their regular-weight core and adding in layers of uber-light paulownia – the ski industry’s current wood of choice thanks to its exceptionally high strength-to-weight ratio. The remaining poplar keeps the core responsive edge-to-edge and gives the ski its trademark rebound and liveliness.

With a ski like the Black Crows Corvus Freebird, the only limit to how far they take you is your stamina and sense of adventure. For everything else, the Corvus Freebird provides you with all the skiing and touring performance you could possibly hope for, leaving you free to do what you do best – putting in the kick turns in pursuit of remote virgin slopes.
