Until outdoor gear has a permanent home at Freeze, here’s a guide to the kind of outdoor kit that you’ll find in store and why we're stoked to offer you it.
Where it all began…
Freeze started life back in 2000 and, despite all the animosity that existed between skiers and snowboarders back then, we were the first shop in the UK to cater for both. We knew then, as we know now, that we just love the snow and the mountains, regardless of how you choose to enjoy them.
Since then, the team has grown and so has our breadth of our expertise, but regardless of whether we’re primarily surfers, skiers, snowboarders or none of the above, we all share a love of the outdoors. The thing is, we’re not just skiers, snowboarders or surfers. We love mountain biking and road cycling, skating and hiking, hill walking and trail running and paddleboarding and climbing and kayaking and... well… pretty much anything you can do outside.
The fun doesn’t stop when the activity does!
We love to do these things and we don’t want to go home when they end. We want to stay out and watch the sunset over the sea or the loch and build a fire and drink whisky and listen to each other’s stories until the wee small hours. So, by default, we’re all campers too.
But being in the line of work we’re in, we’re also shameless gearheads – so we want to find the best tent and the comfiest sleeping mat, the warmest sleeping bag and the most lightweight chair. We want the fastest-boiling stove that works at every altitude and we want cookware that packs in the most efficient way. We want a durable drybag or duffel to pack it all away in.
We’re stoked to share our love of the outdoors with you
We want to seek out all this kit for ourselves and it excites us, which is exactly why we know that you guys will love it too. We’re all just outdoor people doing lots of different outdoor things, sharing our knowledge and stoke about outdoor products with each other.
With that in mind, it makes perfect sense that we started selling outdoor gear, and that it’s been really successful since we did. All that means is that we get to share more and more of the cool stuff we like with you guys – and there’s nothing we like more!
What you’ll find in store...
Outdoor kit is relatively new to the store, and won’t have a permanent home until we launch our new website, which is coming very soon. So until then, we wanted to highlight the sorts of outdoor gear that you can find in store at Freeze.
Let’s take a look!
Unless you’re a truly hardcore bivvy-monger, or lightweight tarp-dweller, chances are that you look to a tent for shelter and a home from home. We’ve put together a choice selection of one-man to four-man tents in designs ranging from festival-friendly single-walled designs to four-season+ winter mountaineering tents.
Another outdoor sleeping essential is the sleeping bag. It’s crucial to a good night’s sleep in so many ways, and there’s a lot to think about in terms of packability and portability, type of insulation you need and the rest. That’s why we’ve cherry-picked this top selection of bags from some of the best brands in the business.
You might be forgiven for thinking that you lose more heat to the air through your sleeping bag than you do to the ground, but in a lot of situations you’d be mistaken. Heat loss to the cold ground can be massive, which is why choosing the right sleeping mat is so important. Grab the style and R-value that you need from our great range.
All this hiking, touring and surfing is hungry work. At some stage, you’re gonna want to eat, and that’s where your stove comes in. Even if you just want a coffee, or to melt some snow for fresh drinking water, a fast and reliable camp burner is exactly what you need. Here’s a selection of our favourites.
And of course, when you start to whip up those culinary camping delights, you’re going to need some cookware to do it with. We’ve got super lightweight and packable sets of pots, pans, plates, mugs, utensils and about everything else you could need. Check it out!
Staying hydrated is so important, whatever you’re doing. Water bottles might seem like a bit of a no-brainer, but there’s a huge selection out there to choose from. From simple canteens to backpack reservoirs, different construction materials, with or without filters – it’s up to you. Whatever you need though, you’ll find it here.
Let’s not forget, if you’re off on an adventure far in the wilderness, clean water isn’t always available. Even in water that looks clear, there are bacteria and viruses that can really ruin your day. You’ll be safest if you use some sort of water filtration to make sure that your water’s clean.
At the end of the day, there’s little better than taking a load off after a long day on your feet. We’ve got simple lightweight cushions, standalone camping chairs, or ways to turn your inflatable sleeping mat into a comfy seat. Take your pick.
Backpacks and Duffel Bags
Whatever you’re doing in the great outdoors, it’s unlikely that you’re going to want or be able to carry all your stuff about by hand. There’s no substitute for a good backpack or day pack.
If you’re car camping or on a long trip where you need a lot of gear to keep at a base camp, a good quality duffel bag could be exactly what you need. They’re cavernous, robust and look great.
Any questions or suggestions?
