Hot off a stunning comeback victory in the Billabong Pro Tahiti, aerial-master Julian Wilson finds himself in a seven-way race to the finish line of the Championship Tour overall. Sitting pretty in fifth position after a gruelling battle with Gabriel Medina, the Aussie ripper is right there in the mix with just a few events left to go. There’s surely no better time to take a look at some Wilson-inspired kit that just might help you to recreate some of that Tahiti-taming style.
While at the forefront of the progression of the sport, with a host of world-firsts to his name, the native of Coolum Beach, Queensland, has become a true fan favourite since making a split-second decision to come to the aid of Big Mick Fanning during his much-publicised J-Bay Open shark attack. An emotional interview or two later and Wilson was considered by many to be a hero, and by pretty much everyone else to be a genuinely nice chap indeed.
It’s no surprise, then, that he’s rocking some pretty big brands out there in the water and back on land. From Red Bull and JS Industries, to Nike, Hurley, FCS and Oakley ? Julian works with some of the biggest in the business. And for us, we?re stoked to be able to stock a bunch of his signature products and gear that you?re likely to find him reppin? at contests around the globe. Let’s take a look at what’s in store.
In the water?
Hurley Advantage Plus
New for this season is the Advantage Plus range of suits from Hurley. Julian’s long been a supporter of Hurley wetsuits, turning to their brand of free-moving neoprene when he needs a bit of warmth in the water.
The Advantage Plus range is an excellent way in to the Hurley range ? competitively priced, feature packed, and like all Hurley wetsuits (in our opinion), great looking. We?re stocking them in a range of thicknesses from 2/2 up to a 5/3, each one featuring the same double-glued and blindstitched seams and fuzzy lining throughout, with added hollow-fibre at the chest.
Thinner suits are backed up with critical stress-point taping, while thicker models offer 5mm of hand-glued internal taping to give an extra boost of watertight durability.
FCS II JW Fins
Julian’s signature edition fin from FCS is the FCS II JW. Whereas his previous fin was built for tighter turns, the new-season fin sits in the FCS Carver range, designed to deliver a confidence-inspiring blend of speed, projection and control. With plenty of rake, the new JW is a fast yet predictable thruster that allows you to push the board hard through turns.
Did we mention that Julian was an incredibly nice guy? Thought so. It’s even evident in his fin range, where you can grab a limited edition pink colourway in aid of the Breast Cancer Foundation. Julian’s mum is a breast cancer survivor, so a portion of the proceeds of each sale go towards the charity, which is so close to his heart. What a legend!
FCS Julian Wilson Traction Pad
Clearly, good guys need good grip too, and Julian’s signature traction tailpad delivers just that. It brings a level of durability and design that you?d expect from every FCS tailpad, but with the JW signature model they’ve concentrated on delivering maximum grip with minimum weight.
With a thinner foam across most of the pad and extra perforations, they’ve kept weight low, while the Trapeze arch bar uses defined channels to direct water away from the sanded surface and maintain grip.
In terms of looks, you can grab it in loud and lairy camo design, or a fairly stealthy black with highlights of green. Switch the green for highlights of pink in his limited-edition Breast Cancer Foundation model and you’ll be donating to his closest cause once again.
On the streets?
Julian has been representing Oakley for time, and the Holbrook is his sunny of choice. Originally designed by snowboarder Shaun White, the Holbrook offers a blend of traditional styling elements from 40s, 50s and 60s Americana, updated for the 21st century. Incredibly well made, and packed with the sorts of quality design features that you?d expect from Oakley, you’ll find the Holbrook in regular, polarized and stainless steel versions.
Hurley Dri-Fit Solar Hoodie
When you’ve jumped out of the water, struggled out of your suit and got dried off, there’s just nothing better than chucking on a cozy hood. The Solar Hoodie from Hurley delivers classic and understated looks, with a front pouch pocket and adjustable draw cord hood, in Nike’s cosy Dri-Fit polyester fabric.
Of course, Dri-Fit is a wicking, technical fibre that’s excellent at transferring sweat away from your body and regulating your body temperature, so you’ll find it super comfy in a range of conditions and it’ll work great as a light mid-layer too.
If you prefer a front zipper, then we thoroughly advise you to check out the Therma Protect Plus.
Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski Suede Skate Shoe
If, like Julian, you happen to be sponsored by Hurley, which is closely affiliated to Nike, and you?re in need of a comfortable and classic-looking skate shoe to kick about town in, then it’s pretty hard to look past the ever-popular Janoski.
When you spend at least half your life in flip-flops, or ?thongs? as the Aussie wave wizard would be more likely to call them, then you?re going to very much appreciate the wrap-around sockliner and cushioned Zoom unit that the Janoskis provide. And with that quality suede construction, you’ll be turning heads like an Aussie surf god in no time.
