World class helmets and goggles from big bad Bob
In the winter of 1965 an orthodontist named Bob Smith was completing an epic ski trip in Sun Valley, Idaho, but he came across a problem – his goggles kept fogging up. Convinced he could do better, he decided to do something about it, and Smith Optics was born.
Smith set up a factory in Clearfield, Utah then set out to design the best goggles. He coined the company’s mission statement to ‘Make Great Days Better’, and their first task was to make a goggle that provided fog-free clarity for those epic days skiing.
It’s been almost 50 years since that Idaho ski trip, and in that time Bob’s company has turned his frustration for goggle fog into one of action sports’ biggest eyewear brands. Smith now makes a range of cutting-edge goggles, sunglasses and helmets that’ll keep your eyes sharp and head safe, merging the latest trends and tech to keep you looking good while you’re out on the mountain.
Since their inception, Smith Optics has been at the forefront of innovation trying to solve Bob’s fog problem. They were the first company to create the sealed double goggle lens, and the first to incorporate ventilated foam linings into goggle frames.
Today, Smith goggles use the most innovative materials and designs to give you the ultimate in functionality and comfort with a focus on anti-fogging. Each Smith goggle lens features a multi-layer construction for increased breathability and is enhanced with a Fog-X treatment, which is etched into the lens so it won’t wear off. Their goggle frames are also extremely light – combining Grilamid nylon and handcrafted acetate for the ultimate combination of flexibility and strength.
Check out Smith’s high-end goggle lenses for their built-in polarization, which filters out 99% of the glare that comes off bright snow and reflective surfaces. And look out for their patented ChromaPop Technology that delivers the ultimate ‘pop’ in colour definition when you’re riding.
Many models come with two lenses, and incorporate Smith’s Interlock Interchangeable Technology, with innovative Pivlock mechanism to make it super-easy to swap your lenses in any conditions.
Stylish and Safe Brain Buckets
First and foremost, every Smith helmet is designed with your safety in mind. They focus the design process around four key pillars of low and high speed impact, rotational impact and multi-impact – using different construction techniques and technologies to address each one and keep you protected in every situation.
But let’s not forget they also want to make sure you look good. That’s why each helmet uses their match curve construction – to give you the best possible helmet-goggle interface with no more gaper gaps!
And while you’re wrapped up safe and looking good, they’ll also keep you cool, using specialist internal airflow dynamics to channel cool air into the helmet while venting hot and sweaty air out the back.
When it comes to helmets, they’ve pretty much thought of everything.
