The ABS Vario system provides users with an ABS Airbag and offers various different size equipment packs to zip-on from 8L to 55L depending on where the user is going and for how long. The bags are quick and easy to switch over and can be changed without having to disable the ABS mechanism.
The Pack: The base unit backpack includes the 170L twin airbags & a 8L Zip-On and will require an activation trigger and air canister (Sold Separately). The activation trigger can be placed on either the right of left hand shoulder strap depending on the user's preference. The chest strap and large hip strap provides additional support and stability.
Steel vs Carbon Air Canister: There is a choice of Carbon or Steel air canisters both providing the same volume of air but the carbon canister weighing in 280g vs 510g for the steel option.
The Airbag: The airbags is made of the same material as automotive airbags to provide extreme durability and resistance to forces if the user needs to deploy it in an avalanche situation
Sizing: The large back is designed for those with a back of 46cm or more measured from the top of the hip to the bottom of the neck / top of the shoulder
Our Insight: A few of the Freeze Team have been using the ABS Vario packs for the last two seasons and have had a great experience with them. My first impression was how comfortable and functional the packs were. I had wondered if there would be a compromise on the fit / design of the bag in order to accommodate the ABS system of if the primary focus would have been to make it an airbag and functional considerations second. This wasn't the case at all. Even with the 50L pack fully loaded for multi-day trips it's an incredible comfortable pack.
Each of the zip-on backs are designed for the type of trip and volume of gear you are carrying. So the essentials are always easily accessible. When chosing which size zip-on packs to get I'd recommend going for a pack one size up from the size you think you want. The additional weight is negligible and it's always better to have a bit too much space than having to struggle to get it all in.
If you have any questions about the ABS set-up, feel free to give the shop a call and ask to speak to a member of staff.
