Oakley Goggle Lens Guide
Oakley ski and snowboard goggles are considered by many to be the ultimate eyewear for performance and fit – with a diverse range of styles and lenses to suit pretty much any rider in whatever conditions they might find themselves in while they're out on the hill. But with such a wide range of good looking lenses available, how do you choose the ones that don’t just look the part, but keep your vision sharp as a tack on your next trip?
Well, fear not – we’ve put together the most comprehensive Oakley goggle lens guide on the internet to help you navigate your way around the range. Below you'll find a table outlining the whole range, what conditions they're best in, how much light they transmit to your eye, what they're like and what goggles they're available for. But before that, we'll explain how it all works and let you know about a few of our favourites.
The technical bit
The lowdown on lenses
Most goggles come with a single lens that’ll work well in either low light, very bright light or somewhere in between – but it’s worth remembering that it’s unlikely you’ll get a lens that will work really well in all conditions. That’s why we stock a full range of replacement Oakley goggle lenses – so you can pick up a spare and make sure you’re not caught out next time you hit the hill.
But which lens works best in which conditions? Read on and we’ll explain.
Talking about transmission
Each ski or snowboard goggle lens is tailored to a specific weather condition, offering different levels of light transmission and contrast. Light transmission just means the amount of light that the lens lets through to your eye.
A lens that offers a high level of light transmission, usually lighter and clearer in colour, will let plenty of light through to the eye, making it great for helping you to see in flat light or low light conditions. A lens that offers a lower level of light transmission, appearing darker or less transparent, will let far less light through to the eye, meaning that it’ll protect your eye from the glare and harmful rays of the sun in very bright alpine conditions.
Contrast and coatings
While light transmission determines how much light reaches your eye overall, contrast is the difference between light and dark that adds texture and fine detail to your vision. Two lenses that offer the same level of light transmission can give you different degrees of contrast, thanks to their colour, composition, or a special metal oxide coating that’s added to the lens known as Iridium.
As we all know, it’s not always about how bright or dark it is our there – whiteout conditions can be still be bright and shadows can cause issues on a bluebird day – so choosing a lens that offers more contrast and finer detail can really help.
The finer points of Prizm
Oakley's flagship range of lenses all feature Prizm technology – the result of decades of colour science research. Essentially, it's a system of colour filtration that uses highly advanced coloured dyes in the lens to enhance the colours of light that your eyes need and removes or minimizes the ones they don't.
Prizm lenses cut out the background noise, letting your eye deal only with the important wavelengths that deliver detail in a given environment. You see more contrast and surface detail with less light, maintaining that all-important depth perception and unrivaled visual clarity.
If you take a look at the table below, you'll see that – thanks to an unprecedented level of control of the specific wavelengths hitting your eye – Prizm lenses can do a superior job with less light than the equivalent regular lens.
A few of our favourites
Below there's a table that’ll give you the vital statistics for every lens in the range, but in case it looks like information overload, here are a few of the top picks from our expert team…
For blazing bluebird days
Prizm Black Iridium
With that clever Prizm lens material, a light transmission score of just 5-10% and an Iridium coating for even higher definition, the Prizm Black Iridium is our goggle of choice for those beautiful bright days charging the piste, lapping the park or searching for fresh lines.
If it doesn’t fit the model of your choice, look out for the popular neutral classic, Dark Grey.
When it’s flatter than a pancake out there
When the sun deserts you, don’t let it kill your vibe – snap on the H.I. Yellow instead. With 78% visual light transmission and a High Intensity Iridium coating to wring every last ounce of contrast out of what light you have, it'll keep the dream alive in the worst of conditions.
The Prizm H.I. Pink is obviously a solid choice too, and because it lets less light through overall, it's likely to give you more protection should things brighten up unexpectedly.
When the weather can't make up it's mind
Prizm Torch Iridium
A great all-rounder for when there's clouds about and the sun is in and out all day, the Prizm Torch Iridium is as close as you're going to get to a one-lens quiver. Prism tech and high-def Iridium coating keep the detail and depth perception on point, and it just happens to look sick too.
An honourable mention has to go to the VR50 Pink Iridium too, for a non-Prizm lens it copes phenomenally well in a huge range of light conditions.
