Only into its second year, the Volkl 90EIGHT is back again for its sophomore season after a hugely successful debut. It’s an incredibly light weight, versatile freeride ski that handles anything from bumps to trees to groomers, and even powder and crud. Slightly stiffer than mid-flex, they’re perfect for skiers who want a responsive and stable ski with just enough flex and forgiveness to absorb vibrations or unseen ruts and moguls. Ideal for intermediate and advanced skiers.

Built around a multi-layer wood core which combines two different densities of wood. In the binding area underfoot, a dense Ash wood core is used, while the rest of the ski utilises Poplar. The dense Ash underfoot give the bindings secure screw retention and stability, while the softer poplar sections create durability and pop. Volkl tailor the flex pattern for each ski model to match the desired performance characteristics.

The full sidewall construction maintains fantastic edge hold throughout the turn while simultaneously helping to absorb vibration from ruts and uneven snow pack.

Carbon stringers running the length of the core supercharge the ski’s performance by providing continuous flex and responsive rebound from tip to tail.

The P-Tex 2100 sintered base uses high performance materials, ensuring maximum speed, agility and durability. Due to the high level of wax absorption, abrasion resistance and durability the base retains excellent gliding characteristics throughout the life of the ski.

The 3D carbon ridge technology is one of the most advanced ski construction techniques which exists currently. The most noticeable feature of this technology is a raised central ridge which sharply tapers outward towards the edges, in front of and behind the binding. This reduces the swing weight of the core to a minimum, significantly enhancing the agility and manoeuvrability of the ski. This unique construction also allows for precise weight distribution, leading to even flex throughout the ski without compromising its durability or elasticity.

Tip and tail rocker blends reverse camber in the nose and tails with traditional positive camber underfoot. This allows the ski to charge with ease through unpredictable snow but hold a solid carve when required and because you’re not flexing against the camber in the nose and tail it’s easier to butter and press the ski in powder.

Topped off with tapered nose and tail which moves the widest points of the sidecut closer to the centre of the ski. This drastically reduces the occurrence of tip and tail hang-ups on hard pack and in powder while giving the skis a turn radius similar to that of a shorter size.

What we say: “The 90Eight builds on the innovation of the V-Werks range and combines it with the construction found in Volkl’s freeride range. The result is a hybrid, cross-over that aims to win over unwaivering fans of the Kendo and Mantra.”

Size Guide

The size chart below provides a basic guide to finding the right ski length based on your height and ability but there are several other factors you should consider before choosing your new skis!

The two most relevant considerations when interpreting the chart below are your weight and the type of skiing you intend to do.

Weight: If you’re a heavier built that the average person of your height then we suggest choosing a longer ski as a heavier skier requires more edge to grip the snow and more base area for floatation in powder and cruddy snow.  Conversely, if you’re a slimmer build you may want to consider going for a shorter ski as you’ll need less edge / ski to support your weight than someone of an ‘average’ build.

Skier Type: Secondly, if you want a ski that’s going to inspire confidence when you’re skiing fast and you like to ski faster than most, then a longer ski is going to be preferable.   The additional edge and float provided by a longer ski will give you a more stable ride.  If, however, you’re more freestyle focussed and you want a ski that’s going to be more nimble and easier to manoeuvre at low speeds then a slightly shorter ski will work better for you as there will be less ski to manage.

If you have any queries at all on finding the right ski or ski size for you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us for further advice.
