BMT by name, big mountain tour by nature. The Volkl V-Werks BMT 109 is arguably the ultimate backcountry touring ski. Built using super lightweight, next-generation materials which not only make self-powered ascents effortless, also maximise the fun you have on the descent. This isn’t a ski for the fainthearted, in both performance and price tag, best suited to advanced and expert skiers who like their skis to be as much of a talking point as they are high-performing.

The Volkl V-WERKS High-Tech line demonstrates just what can be achieved with the latest in design, materials and technology. This custom family of skis focuses on revolutionary design that aims to trim every possible gram from the ski, resulting in an extremely lightweight ski packed with premium performance without sacrificing stability or durability. The construction and ultra-low profile design affords the ski fantastic edge hold and lightning-fast response.

Built around Volkl’s multi-layer wood core lite which combines two different densities of wood. In the binding area underfoot, a dense Ash wood core is used, while the rest of the ski utilises lightweight Paulownia. The dense Ash underfoot give the bindings secure screw retention and stability, while the softer Paulownia, known for its unrivalled strength-to-weight ratio, offers lightweight performance and durability. Volkl tailor the flex pattern for each ski model to match the desired performance characteristics.

The hybrid centre sidewall construction combines traditional ABS underfoot with a full cap construction in the nose and tail. This gives the ski great edge hold and shock absorption underfoot with reduced overall weight and relaxed initiation into and out of turns.

The P-Tex 4500 sintered base uses world cup performance materials, ensuring maximum speed, agility and durability. Due to the high level of wax absorption, abrasion resistance and durability the base retains excellent gliding characteristics throughout the life of the ski.

Volkl’s Ice Off topsheet uses a unique surface structure and hydrophobic composition to reduces icing and snow build up by repelling snow from the topsheet. This leads to a drastic reduction of weight while in use, on average up to 20% to 30%. Lighter skis prevent fatigue while touring, especially on long and steep uphill sections.

A full carbon fibre wrap is added to the ski to create torsional stiffness for powerful and responsive edge-to-edge transfer. As well as reinforcing the ski, the wrap drastically reduces the overall weight contributes to an even flex from nose to tail.

The 3D carbon ridge technology is one of the most advanced ski construction techniques which exists currently. The most noticeable feature of this technology is a raised central ridge which sharply tapers outward towards the edges, in front of and behind the binding. This reduces the swing weight of the core to a minimum, significantly enhancing the agility and manoeuvrability of the ski. This unique construction also allows for precise weight distribution, leading to even flex throughout the ski without compromising its durability or elasticity.

The full rocker camber gives the ski a continuous curve from nose to tail when it’s weight-loaded. This helps to keep the ski afloat in deeper snow while also reducing the instances of catching your edges by raising the contact points.

Topped off with tapered nose and tail which moves the widest points of the sidecut closer to the centre of the ski. This drastically reduces the occurrence of tip and tail hang-ups on hard pack and in powder while giving the skis a turn radius similar to that of a shorter size.

What we say: “The pinnacle of powder performance, the BMT 109 features a waist width perfect for staying afloat in chest deep powder. Made to access hard to reach areas, then make to most of them when you get there, powder just got even more fun.”

Size Guide

The size chart below provides a basic guide to finding the right ski length based on your height and ability but there are several other factors you should consider before choosing your new skis!

The two most relevant considerations when interpreting the chart below are your weight and the type of skiing you intend to do.

Weight: If you’re a heavier built that the average person of your height then we suggest choosing a longer ski as a heavier skier requires more edge to grip the snow and more base area for floatation in powder and cruddy snow.  Conversely, if you’re a slimmer build you may want to consider going for a shorter ski as you’ll need less edge / ski to support your weight than someone of an ‘average’ build.

Skier Type: Secondly, if you want a ski that’s going to inspire confidence when you’re skiing fast and you like to ski faster than most, then a longer ski is going to be preferable.   The additional edge and float provided by a longer ski will give you a more stable ride.  If, however, you’re more freestyle focussed and you want a ski that’s going to be more nimble and easier to manoeuvre at low speeds then a slightly shorter ski will work better for you as there will be less ski to manage.
